Abstract (en)
Discusses the church as remodelled by Leon Battista Alberti. Refutes the theory that the two blind arches on either side of the main door were originally intended to be open to receive two sarcophagi. Argues instead that one sepulcher was intended--probably in the space above the door--for Sigismondo's pious elder half-brother Galeotto Roberto. In this way, the holy body could be brought back into the dynastic association of the church (the Malatesta family tombs were within) while still conforming with Galeotto Roberto's expressed desire to be buried on the exterior of the church. In so doing, Alberti would have preserved both the architectural and historical integrity of the Roman triumphal arch which was the basis for his facade design.
