Survey of photography in Manchester and Liverpool, 1840-1880, covering institutions (especially the Manchester Photographic Society), individual photographers and their interrelationships, as well as exhibitions, aesthetic trends, technical processes and innovation. Emphasizes the dominant role of John Benjamin Dancer as a link among literary, scientific, and philosophical circles in both cities.
