Examines correspondence, especially among Ludwig II, Wagner, and Semper, concerning Semper's project (1864-68) for a monumental theater in Munich for the performance of Wagner's work. Notes that although never built, Semper's Munich festival theater became an important prototype for opera houses in Central Europe, with a symbolic association with Wagnerian aesthetics.
