Reflects on the art critic's experience of viewing art and the relation of this experience to the particular surrounding urban environment. In this context, discusses the writings of John Ruskin, Adrian Stokes, Walter Benjamin, T.J. Clark, Fredric Jameson, Arthur Danto, and others, noting the author's own indebtedness to these writers and his own experiences writing about contemporary New York art in the 1980s. Concludes that the lesson that all these writers teach is that "all aesthetics constantly aspires towards the condition of social criticism."
