Offers a fresh interpretation of the iconography of Orcagna's Strozzi Altarpiece (Florence, S. Maria Novella, Strozzi chapel, 1354-1357), focusing on the three central figures: Christ, Peter, and S. Thomas Aquinas, all of whom are depicted in multiple roles. Examines manuscript illuminations of the prologue of the Decretum Gratiani as an iconographic source, and interprets the central figures in the context of late 14th c. claims for the spiritual and temporal powers of the papacy. Suggests that both in its glorification of Thomas Aquinas and in its representation of papal power, the altarpiece promotes Dominican values.
