Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the decoration (1589-1600) of the Cappella degli Angeli in the Gesù, Rome, as an example of the indirect influence of Roberto Bellarmino on Counter-Reformation iconography. Discusses the cult of the Seven Angels (or Archangels) in Jesuit thought; traces the vicissitudes of Scipione Pulzone's original altar painting of the Seven Angels in Adoration, replaced by another painting in 1600. Describes the mural paintings, attributed to Federico Zuccari and assistants, and compares Zuccari's representation of the souls in Purgatory to other depictions of the subject, 15th-17th cs.
