Abstract (en)

Discusses the problems of using coins to date burial sites, exemplified by the cemetery of Cornus, 4th-7th cs. Distinguishes between the obolo viatico (found inside the tomb) and obolo offerta (found outside), and describes the use, in some cases, of older coins no longer in circulation. Suggests revisions to the chronology of other Byzantine and Lombard sites in Italy.
