The author defends his previous interpretation (Felix Ravenna, 1979, 118, no 2) of the Carolingian ivories on the Cathedra Petri (Vatican, S. Pietro) of Charles the Bald and cites further examples of Herculean symbolism in Byzantine and Carolingian art.
