Presents reasons for the inclusion of the orant Virgin in pre-Iconoclastic images of the Ascension of Christ, including those on 6th c. Palestinian ampullae from Monza (Museo del Duomo, no. 10) and Bobbio (Museo di S. Colombano, n. 20). Rejects Otto Demus's interpretation of the Ascension imagery as purely narrative in character.
