Abstract (en)
Surveys the development of Utrecht from its 1st c. Roman foundation and decline ca. 260, through its Frankish resettlement in the 7th c. and conversion to Christianity, expansion in the 10th-11th cs., including the 'cross of churches' around the cathedral initiated by Bishop Bernold (1027-54), decline and near destruction by flood ca. 1170, and eventual assumption of its present form in the 13th c.
