Abstract (en)
Study of Rembrandt's lifelong preoccupation with self-portraiture examined in relation to his historical, social, and cultural circumstances, including 17th c. perceptions of the self, changing concepts of the artist, and the Christian valuing of the individual. Argues that Rembrandt's self-portraits were personal works, largely internally motivated, that were part of the artist's process of identity formation and self-definition.
