Discusses four emblems with Hercules as protagonist published by Alciati in 1531 and 1546: Hercules and the Pygmies; the Gallic Hercules; the Labors of Hercules; and Hercules' Immortality. Argues that in them Alciati was portraying not a remote Greek hero but a living Erasmus, endowing his friend with a multi-faceted persona.
