Abstract (en)
Discusses Bosch's depictions of Hell, especially as represented in the Last Judgment (Vienna, Akademie der bildende Künste), Haywain (Madrid, Museo del Prado), and Garden of Earthly Delights (Madrid, Museo del Prado). Shows how Bosch draws on traditional literary and pictorial descriptions of the afterlife as well as new sources, such as manuscript illumination, to create a new and frightening vision of the fate awaiting unrepentant sinners. Contrasts Bosch's conception of Hell with the orderly vision of Dante Alighieri as presented in the Inferno, noting that both represent different aspects of medieval theology.
