Book examining the career and significance of the 19th c. American still-life painter, published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition of the same title. Features 22 thematic essays arranged in three sections: "Approaches to still-life painting" examines Harnett in relation to his contemporaries and explores the significance of trompe l'oeil in the American artistic tradition; "Elements of artistic development" considers Harnett's formative training and experiences; "The major themes" focuses on Harnett's paintings by subject matter--fruit, newspapers, books, bric-a-brac, hunting equipment, vanitas imagery, literary motifs, music--and explores meanings that contemporary viewers might have found in the artist's images.
