Analyzes Van Mander's text (published 1604) which was the first fully argued theory of Netherlandish painting, drawing and printmaking; and inaugurated the canon of 15th-16th c. Dutch and Flemish masters. It also included a history of ancient, Italian and northern art. Asks what kind of text it is; why it was written; and what its argument is as a whole.
