Abstract
(en)
Discusses the 1877 libel suit brought by Whistler against Ruskin, and reconstructs from contemporary manuscript and published sources the celebrated trial that followed in 1878. Sees these events as central to the evolution of the aesthetic movement in England. Reprints Ruskin's previously unpublished instructions to defense counsel.
