Volume 1 is a collection of eight essays in Finnish on aspects of the Ateneum museum in Helsinki 1884 to the present. Translations in Swedish and English are provided in vol. 2. Essays include Eeva Maija Viljo on the decoration scheme of the Ateneum; Olli Valkonen on art museum directors of the Ateneum 1869-1990; Severi Parko with thoughts on the museum and its collections; Tuula Arkio on the history of the museum's display arrangements; Susanna Pettersson on the history of the collections; Heikki Malme on the collection of drawings and prints; Marjatta Levanto on the museum and its public; and Irmeli Isomäki on exhibitions there of the Fine Arts Association of Finland (1847-1938) and the Fine Arts Academy of Finland (1939-1990). Volume 3 contains six essays in Finnish (with Swedish and English translations) on the Ateneum renovation and extension underway since 1983. These essays are by Marjatta Erwe; Tuula Arkio; Ola Laiho; Mikko Pulkkinen; Juha Åberg; Erkki Hakanen; and Asko Rahikka.
