Abstract
(en)
Discusses the popularity, especially during the 12th c., of the literary genre of ecstatic otherworld voyages, and the place of The visions of Tondal within that genre. Then focuses on the latter's author, the monk Marcus; the literary qualities of the text; and the reasons for its enthusiastic reception. Examines the numerous French translations 13th-15th cs. (including Getty MS 30) in relation to the Latin original, as well as some idiosyncrasies of the French redaction in the Getty text. A discussion of the didactic function of such an unusual illuminated manuscript (Simon Marmion, 1474) concludes the essay.
