Abstract (en)
Analysis of contrasting text-image relationships shows that Simon Marmion's pictorial interpretation of The visions of Tondal (Malibu, Getty Museum, MS 30) clearly operates within the framework of a specific genre--the illustrated infernal vision. By faithfully expressing the highlights of the narrative, Marmion arrives at solutions similar to those of the artists who had provided other infernal visions with detailed sequences of images. The Getty manuscript is distinguished however by the style and quality of its miniatures.
