Abstract (en)
Discusses several illustrated examples of The vision of Lazarus, an infernal vision which focuses on the seven punishments connected with the Seven Deadly Sins. Considers three illuminated manuscript copies--French 1460s-1490s and Flemish 1490s. Also considers two illustrated printed versions published in France in the 1490s. Compares these with Simon Marmion's Visions of Tondal of 1474 (Malibu, Getty Museum, MS 30). Concludes with remarks on the moralizing and didactic qualities of the three Visions of Lazarus manuscripts. Appended transcriptions of the French texts from these.
