Abstract
(en)
Discusses the typology of the Jesus Christ in Distress figure as it developed in the late 15th-early 16th cs., citing a number of examples in a variety of media, mainly by German artists. Notes the evolution of the figure from a devotional image in the late Middle Ages to a realistic, politically-charged image of the oppressed peasant during the Renaissance.
