Abstract
(en)
Examines the chief issues involved in the apprehension of the formal aspects of the triumph or procession. Aims to sketch out the main lines along which a formal pragmatics of this genre of spectacle may be elaborated, on the premise that such a task has priority over all questions of syntax and semantics. Method is to consider processional form first in its diachronic unfolding to the perception of the observer and then in its synchronic entirety as a self-contained semiotic system retrievable in an act of recollection. Hopes that this discussion might serve as a propaedeutics to the analysis of Petrarch's Triumphs and to the history of their aesthetic reception.
