Survey exhibition organized by Norman Rosenthal and Germano Celant, features the work of 49 artists, ranging from Medardo Rosso to Francesco Clemente. Catalogue contains 23 essays by 21 authors, arranged in four chronological sections (1900-1919; 1919-1945; 1945-1968; 1968-1988). Each section begins with an essay on the history and culture of Italy in the designated period. Essays include Anna Maria Damigella on Italian divisionism and symbolism at the turn of the century; Jole De Sanna on early 20th c. Italian sculpture; Ester Coen on Futurism; Carlo Bertelli on Modigliani; Paolo Baldacci on De Chirico and Savinio; Wieland Schmied on De Chirico, metaphysical painting and the international avant-garde; Joan M. Lukach on Giorgio Morandi; Enrico Crispolti on the second phase of Futurism; Emily Braun on Mario Sironi and a fascist art; Pia Vivarelli on figurative art of the 1930s; Luciano Caramel on abstract art of the 1930s; Mario De Micheli on realism in the post-war period; Maurizio Calvesi on art informel and abstraction in the 1950s; Celant on Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni; Giuliano Briganti on Italian art of the early 1960s; Caroline Tisdall on Arte Povera; Rosenthal on Italian art of the 1980s, especially the work of Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino.
