Abstract (en)
Considers the many reactions to, and interpretations of, William Holman Hunt's painting (London, Tate Gallery) when it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1854. Argues that "right reading"--then or now--involves the acknowledgement of the way in which the painting's power to communicate rests to a large extent on its incorporation, and manipulation, of social codes. Focuses especially on questions of sexual morality and the debate about Pre-Raphaelite style.
