Abstract
(en)
Examines imagery relating, whether positively or negatively, to matrimony in the paintings and drawings of J.E. Millais. Fundamental to Pointon's argument is the premise that paintings do not reflect a given social reality exterior to them but are themselves a discursive practice. In other words imagery is seen to operate as a defining process, unifying, obscuring and linking fictions in the production and enforcement of ideology.
