Abstract (en)
Takes issue with Panofsky's interpretation of Poussin's two paintings of The Arcadian Shepherds, with special reference to his readings of the inscription "Et in Arcadia Ego." Concludes: "Since there may thus be more than one way to understand the relation of words to image painting circa 1640, the goal of art history is to produce as many interpretations as possible which are original, suggestive, and plausible."
