Lazzaro's book, comprising six general chapters organized topically, followed by chapters on four Renaissance gardens (Villa Lante at Bagnaia, Villa Medici at Castello, the Boboli garden in Florence, and the Villa d'Este at Tivoli), is found by the reviewer to be exemplary, the product of thorough research based on primary sources, with extensive visual and written documentation. In contrast, she finds Bazin's book cursory and insufficient as a survey of gardens from antiquity to the 20th c.
