History of the problem of water supply in relation to population increase and urban development in Naples, 16th-19th cs., and of the efforts of successive engineers, architects and administrators, beginning with Domenico Fontana in the 1590s, to solve it. Notes chronic failure to plan as well as the chronic inadequacy of the systems, particularly the Carmignano, Bolla, and Caroline aqueducts. Surveys the present state of the aqueducts, long abandoned.
