Traces the role of Pompeo Colonna, cardinal Francesco Barberini, and Athanasius Kircher in the symbolism of the monument of the elephant with the obelisk (Rome, Piazza della Minerva), designed by Bernini and executed by Ercole Ferrata in 1667 (for Alexander VII), based on a woodcut in Francesco Colonna's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili.
