Traces attitudes to the art of the insane from its "discovery" in the age of Romanticism to its recent decline in the wake of new forms of treatment (chemical intervention, art therapy), as well as neglect, of mental illness. Explores contacts and influences among artists, physicians, and the insane in their common interest in psychopathological art created in response to a spontaneous impulse arising within the individual personality. Focuses on the art of individuals clearly diagnosed as mentally ill, as opposed to (with some exceptions) that of celebrated artists who may have exhibited symptoms of mental illness.
