The boutique "explosion" began in London in the sixties among young designers on the edge of conventional merchandising (Mary Quant, Barbara Hulanicki). Beginning with Paraphernalia (1965) it was picked up in New York by big companies as a means of appealing to young customers in search of fresh designers.
