Japanese export figures of humans, animals, and birds are especially important for the documentation of the trade since they are more readily identified in contemporary documents than are more utilitarian shapes. Recent excavations (1988) at Arita (JPN) revealed important unstratified debris of late 17th and 18th c. export-type figures and molds on what was apparently a dump site.
