Thirty-nine turf mazes are recorded in England, of which 10 survive. Traces the association between Troy and the English mazes to the description of the Game of Troy (Troiae lusus or Troia) in the Aeneid and the medieval Matter of Troy (Benoit de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie, 1165), whereas in Italy and France the tradition depends from the Cretan labyrinth. The labyrinth is endowed with the significance of spatial patterns and range topography, and by extension symbolizes kinship and the social network.
