Focuses on Frederic Leighton's painting (done in Italy 1853-1855) of Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna (London, National Gallery, on loan from the Royal Collection). The painting depicts the procession of the Rucellai Madonna (then thought to be by Cimabue, now given to Duccio; Florence, Uffizi) through the streets of Florence in 1285--an event described by Vasari. Relates Leighton's painting to the writings of Ruskin and Robert Browning.
