Abstract (en)
Essay by Schütz introduces this volume which examines the use and meaning of emblems, words, and writing in visual art, focusing on 20th c. art with emphasis on contemporary examples. Briefly discusses the traditional use of emblems in art and their role in communicating allegorical meanings and moral ideals, drawing parallels with the use of political emblems, symbols of power, and "emblematic" advertising imagery in recent art. Volume also includes an essay by Burghart Schmidt on allegory; interviews with artists Urs Lüthi, Stephan Huber, and Rudolf Herz by Schütz; and statements and projects by eight artists--Thomas Huber, Klaus Kumrow, Minimal Club, Konrad Balder Schäuffelen, Ulrich Horndash, Axel Schäfer, Herbert Achternbusch, and Albert Oehlen.
