Study of innovative contemporary communal housing developments in Denmark, ranging in size from six to 80 households. The 46 communities visited by the authors vary as to size, location, type of ownership, design, and residents' priorities, but all share the following characteristics: a participatory design process, design to support a strong sense of community, common facilities (dining room, kitchen, playrooms, laundry, etc.) to supplement the private dwellings, and management by the residents. The reviewer notes that this model will be difficult to introduce in the United States due to ingrained resistance to communal living.
