Abstract
(en)
Studies the Persian samite chasuble from the Abbazia di S. Salvatore (Abbadia San Salvatore), traditionally associated with S. Mark the pope; dates the cloth to the late 8th or early 9th c., comparing the red samite used to wrap the relics of S. Rémi (Reims, S. Rémi) in the mid-9th c. Argues that the name Iohannis Episcopus embroidered on the chasuble refers to pope John VIII; and suggests that the chasuble was made at the Carolingian court and donated to the abbey due to the close ties between John VIII and Charles the Bald.
