Abstract (en)

Reports the discovery, during restoration of the 8th or 9th c. Persian silk chasuble traditionally known as the Chasuble of S. Mark the Pope (Abbadia San Salvatore, Abbazia di S. Salvatore), of traces of appliqued decoration originally embroidered with pearls, spelling "Iohannis Episcopus" in a Latin cross; compares similar crosses as well as contemporary embroidery; and discusses the design and technique.
