Abstract (en)
Discusses representations of S. Christopher, usually depicted alone except for the Christ Child on his shoulder, in Danish and Swedish mural painting beginning about 1260. Shows that in contrast 15th c. Dutch and German prints often include a hermit holding a lantern, referring to another part of the Christopher legend. Examines two rare examples in mural paintings in Skåne in which the hermit is depicted as female: Bollerup church, 1476, and Östra Vemmerlöv church, 1430-1460. The former depicts a woman with fishing tackle and a lantern; the latter shows a nun holding a lantern.
