Discusses several representations of a fat cow being milked. Notes the different uses of the motif such as in an anonymous painting, Political Allegory, late 18th c. (Lund, Kulturhistoriska museet) where a cow is surrounded by representatives of the four estates: the burgher leading the cow, the nobleman sitting on her, the clergyman milking her and the peasant pulling her tail. Traces the motif to a German print, 1587, in which the cow represents the Netherlands being taken away from Philip II of Spain and exploited by foreign rulers.
