Abstract (en)
Examines how from the Pythagorean-Platonic tradition Medieval Christian authors adopted the doctrine that numbers constitute the basis for harmony of the cosmos. Focusing on the number five notes that this number alludes to the five ages in the week of the creation of the universe. Shows that the five wounds of Christ make the number five a symbol of the Passion. Discusses Christian rose symbolism connected with the number five, especially as it relates to Mary and Jesus Christ. Explains the background to the expression sub rosa, namely that the five-petal rose carved out over confessionals is a reminder of the pledge of secrecy.
