Discusses the iconography of a mural painting, a double frieze, ca.1200 (Hornslet Church, Århus amt), discovered in 1960. The lower frieze depicts two kings leading a troop of equestrian warriors. Suggests that the kings represent Philip Augustus of France and Richard the Lion-hearted of England taking the town of Acre in 1191, a decisive event during the Third Crusade. Argues that the Christians are identified by their swords and the Muslims by their bows and arrows. Believes the purpose of the mural in a Danish church was to commemorate Danish crusaders in Acre. Summarizes earlier scholarship.
