Comments on three recent exhibitions devoted to the works of American black artists: Art as a verb: the evolving continuum, at the Studio Museum in Harlem; The appropriate object, at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; and Traditions and transformations: contemporary Afro-American sculpture at Bronx Museum of the Arts. Notes some shared concerns, including the viability and importance of the concept of black art, the relationship of black art to world cultures, and recognition of black women artists.
