Abstract (en)
Considers the pros and cons of the museum practice of deaccessioning, noting the impact of the current overheated art market, and citing a number of recent auctions which featured prominent pictures from American museum collections. Questions the low level of accountability that museums enjoy and whether such sales really serve the public interest. Includes an interview with William Rubin on deaccessioning, especially in relation to the recent purchase of van Gogh's Portrait of Joseph Roulin by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
