A recent exhibition of Jackson Pollock's black enamel paintings of 1951 at the Gagosian Gallery, New York, prompts these reflections on the reception these works received when they were first exhibited in 1951, and the figurative motifs they displayed. Notes the influence of Picasso on Pollock's imagery.
