Abstract (en)

A number of recent exhibitions devoted to the work of Herman Cherry, including a traveling retrospective which opened at the Ball State University Art Gallery, Muncie, Indiana (10 Dec 1989-4 Feb 1990), inspired this overview of the career of the American painter, 1930s-1980s. Discusses Cherry's distinctive painting style--a personal, non-representational abstraction that emphasizes color as a compositional force.
