Abstract (en)
Tries to isolate and identify those characteristics in the Venetian built environment that are recognizably and specifically Islamic in origin, rather than shared elements inherited from Rome or Byzantium. Suggests that Venetians who spent time in the Eastern Mediterranean may have wished to emulate certain qualities of Arab civilization--its culture, scientific expertise, material prosperity and spiritual unity.
