Detailed account of the failed attempts to erect a monument to Heinrich Heine in Germany in the years 1887-1894. Proponents of the project commissioned Ernst Herter to design three models: a full-length figure of the poet, a bust portrait, and a Lorelei fountain. The third design was finally selected because of its apolitical character. However, in spite of the support of the Austrian empress Elisabeth, no German city would sponsor the project because of widespread political and antisemitic sentiment against Heine. The Lorelei fountain was eventually erected in 1899 in New York, where it has suffered severe damage from vandalism (both intentional and random) from 1900 to the present.
