Discusses the great turreted block which rises from the center of Robert Smythson's Wollaton Hall (built 1580-1588). Suggests this unusual feature may have been inspired by Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, known to Smythson and his patron, Sir Francis Willoughby, through the reconstructions of Nikolaus de Lyra and the writings of Josephus.
