Abstract (en)
Attributes to Schongauer a watercolor Study of Peonies (private collection), and shows its repetition in Schongauer's 1473 painting Madonna of the Rose Garden (Colmar, Dominican church). Further demonstrates that Dürer employed Schongauer's nature study for his 1503 drawing Virgin and Child with a Multitude of Animals (Vienna, Albertina). Suggests that Dürer acquired the drawing from Schongauer's brothers after the artist's death. Argues that Schongauer's watercolor study marks the birth of the scientific depiction of nature in Germany.
